Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Survey Results

The 2023-2024 academic year marked a pivotal moment for UMD as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools became widely available across campus. To better understand how students and instructors are using these tools in academic settings, customized surveys were designed in Spring 2024, led by expert analysts in the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Information Technology (DIT).

Overall, results of the surveys found that while a smaller percentage of students and instructors have started using GenAI for coursework, both groups share a common concern: upholding academic integrity. As experiences with GenAI differ from class to class, there’s a growing opportunity for future education, guidance, and training, as both students and faculty anticipate increased usage in the semesters ahead.
